Sangheeut is delighted to announce its collaborative program, Alter Being, with CALM & PUNK GALLERY, a contemporary art gallery based in Tokyo. This program aims to introduce artists from Korea and Japan to each other's galleries. CALM & PUNK GALLERY presents the works of Hikaru Narita and Shun Okada at sangheeut in Seoul, while sangheeut showcases Seounghee Lee and TZUSOO at CALM & PUNK GALLERY in Tokyo. These artists explore the nuanced boundary between reality and fiction, existence and non-existence, proposing the concept of alternative existence through their parallel exhibitions titled "Alter Being."
Curated by CALM & PUNK GALLERY and on view at sangheeut, Alter Being: The Landscape My Neighbor Saw explores the varied meanings of 'neighbor'—from anonymous individuals on the internet to characters from animations and games, and even the relationship between Japan and Korea. Participating artists present paintings and sculptures featuring kitsch images inspired by anime and games. Narita’s sculptures, appearing almost devoid of human touch and depth, exude a new eeriness. For this exhibition, he will feature a new series highlighting "inner light." Meanwhile, Okada transfers glitches found in Family Computer (Famicom or NES) games onto his canvases, experimenting with painterly methods.

Both artists have developed distinct bodies of work by examining the interaction between humans and non-humans and the potential for symbiosis. Seounghee Lee explores the profound bond between humans and dogs, our common non-human companions. TZUSOO creates multidisciplinary works across various media, focusing on the intricate relationship between the body and material. The exhibition aims to broaden the understanding of non-human elements within the human-non-human relationship that Lee and TZUSOO explore. In light of current disasters and an uncertain future, it encourages moving away from anthropocentric views, promoting solidarity with the myriad beings and things that surround us.
