Digitally Minded, an exhibition showcasing the artistry of Bang
Soyun and Ahry Keem, on view
from August 18th to October 8th. Both Bang and Keem belong to the generation commonly referred to as
'digital natives,' individuals who have grown up in a world immersed in
digitally created images and a wide array of digital devices. What sets them
apart is their status as 'digitally minded' artists. They possess the keen
mindset and natural inclination to embrace and adapt to new digital
technologies, while also delving into the profound ways in which these
innovations reshape our world. It's important to note that they are not merely
categorized as digital natives, a label sometimes associated with
irresponsibility. Digitally Minded comprises three new paintings
and media works by Bang as well as an installation work by Keem that is centred
on videos and occupies the space.
Bang Soyun, an artist who navigates the realms of both the virtual and physical worlds, employs 3D software to craft her art, infusing it with vibrant textures. She uses 3D rendering to concoct unique combinations of textures, colours, and temperatures, resulting in paintings that are meticulously chosen and shaped. These images, handpicked by the artist, take on a third-dimensional quality distinct from the purely digital realm. Bang's portraits are of enigmatic individuals who defy easy categorization as either good or evil, adding layers of imaginative storytelling to her creations. The figures, sporting vividly coloured hair and whimsical accessories are a rarity in the real world but thrive within Bang's unique universe. Additionally, Bang presents short-form video works, where moving characters repeat concise motions on a screen, almost justifying the existence of those born into the digital era. At first, visitors may feel disconnected from these characters, but soon they'll become as familiar as watching neighbourhood kids participating in a dance challenge. It's not just about the broad context of the digital versus reality; it's an exploration of Bang's everyday life and her unique tastes.
Ahry Keem, on the other hand, combines images and digital spaces to create physical installations. Sensory perception plays a central role in her work. Space of Mind, her immersive installation, incorporates four video panels, sound, and carefully arranged spatial elements, offering a multi-layered sensory experience. The video sources, displayed on both analogue and digital devices, are synthesized using an analogue video synthesizer to create organic flows within Keem's conceptual 'space.' These moving images prioritize their organic flow over individual sources or content. As the title suggests, Keem explores emotional resonance through the juxtaposition and collision of non-contextual, non-narrative images, diving deep into our 'mind.' The speed and manner in which each viewer perceives the video are entirely individual experiences, creating a personalized encounter. Furthermore, Keem's abstract images emphasize the concept, inviting us to engage with three extended spaces: the physical exhibition space, the digital video space, and the space of the mind, seamlessly integrated into 'consciousness.' The accompanying sound adds an extra layer of dimension, encompassing all four video panels, leading to either serendipitous harmony or intriguing dissonance. This intensified sensory perception allows us to better understand the world we inhabit.
With Digitally Minded, sangheeut introduces Bang Soyun and Ahry Keem, artists who delve into digital images and their impact on our lives, while exploring the (non)physical and spatial characteristics of the digital realm. About the artists
Bang Soyun (b.1992) has shown images that exist between reality and digital by transferring particles that make up digital images onto the paintings. She embraces the identity of a "digital ghost" and a "nomadic person," constantly pushing the boundaries of digital media, sources, and programs. Bang earned her bachelor's degree in painting from Hongik University and is currently a student at the Department of Fine Arts at Seoul National University of Science and Technology. She held her debut solo exhibition at sangheeut in 2021 and has also exhibited at One and J Gallery (Seoul, 2022), Space So (Seoul, 2022), and Moosey Gallery (London, 2023).
Ahry Keem (b. 1991) crafts and directs visual narratives that explore the role of art within specific media formats. She has contemplated the role of art while working as an art director for films and music videos. Recently, Keem has delved into space-specific video works, investigating the spatial and sensory dynamics of related and unrelated sounds and images. Her art direction credits include the music video for the band Silica Gel (2023), the film The Dream Songs (2022), and the music video for Yeji & Oh Hyuk (2021). In 2023, Keem presented a commissioned video work at the Min Bokjin Museum of Art in Yangju City.

상히읗은 오는 8월 18일부터 10월 8일까지 방소윤과 아리킴의 2인전 ⟪Digitally Minded⟫를 개최한다. 태어남과 동시에 도처에 사린 디지털 기반 이미지와 각종 디지털 기기로 둘러싸인 ‘디지털 네이티브’로 불리우는 세대. 상히읗에서 선보이는 방소윤과 아리킴은 그냥 그렇게 태어났음을 암시하는, 무책임한 세대를 표현하는 디지털 네이티브가 아닌 새로운 기기와 디지털 세계를 목도하고 적응하며, 또 이에 대한 경계를 통해 기술이 세상을 관통하는 방식을 탐구하는 ‘마음’과 ‘성향’을 가진, 이른바 ‘디지털 마음을 가진(digitally minded)’ 작가이다. 이번 ⟪Digitally Minded⟫에서 방소윤은 3점의 신작 회화와 미디어 작품을, 아리킴은 영상을 중심으로 공간을 점유하는 설치 작품을 선보인다.
방소윤은 디지털 세계와 현실세계를 오가며 느낀 감각을 3D 프로그램을 통해 출력하고, 이를 화려한 질감으로 둔칠한 회화 작품으로 구현한다. 3D 렌더링으로 이미지를 제작 및 활용하는 작가는 이렇게 모은 이미지를 재료삼아 질감이나 색, 온도 등을 그만의 방식으로 요리한다. 작가의 온전한 선택과 경험적 판단으로 재정립된 회화 속 이미지들은 방소윤이라는 차원을 거치며 디지털 세계에서와는 또 다른, 제 3의 이미지로 탄생한다. 방소윤의 회화에는 다양한 인물이 등장하는데 이에 대해 작가는 “선이나 악으로 판단하기 어려운 인물들을 사랑한다. 나는 언제나 판단하기 어려운 감각을 느끼며 살아간다”고 덧붙인다. 화려한 색으로 염색된 머리와 키치한 장신구를 한 인물들은 현실 세계에서는 찾아보기 어려운 형태의 인물로 방소윤의 세계에만 존재하고, 그의 작품 세계에 서사를 더해줌으로써 다양한 상상의 여지를 남긴다. 또한, 작가는 최근 ‘숏폼’ 형태의 영상 작품을 선보이기 시작했다. 디지털 세계에서 태어난 인물에게 당위를 주듯 움직임을 부여받은 인물은 캔버스가 아닌 작은 화면에서 짧은 움직임을 반복한다. 이를 마주한 관람객은 처음 보는 인물에 얼핏 괴리를 느끼다가도, 마치 댄스 챌린지를 하는 공원의 아이들을 보는 것처럼 친숙해진다. 디지털과 현실이라는 거시적인 관점이라기보다, 작가가 살고있는 매일의 삶과 일상, 그리고 취향이 다분히 느껴지는 지점이다.
