Located just past the entrance to Haebangchon in Seoul’s Yongsan District, sangheeut is a distinctive exhibition space run by two curators. Reflecting the neighborhood’s multicultural character, the gallery actively seeks out emerging contemporary artists and introduces their work to the public.
The current solo exhibition by Leebinsoyeon centers on a mockumentary video piece titled Nothing(0) Department. The work traces the intertwined lives and conflicts of three women from the artist’s maternal family: her great-grandmother, who was married to a coal mine manager in the 1960s and ’70s; her grandmother, who married the eldest son of that household; and her mother, who grew up between the two. Surrounding this central video are related installation pieces and digital paintings that expand upon the narrative.
Though these women once lived unnoticed and undocumented, they now take center stage in the artist’s work. By following Leebinsoyeon’s perspective on her mother’s life, the exhibition invites viewers to consider the quiet but singular agency of ordinary lives—and to broaden their gaze toward overlooked narratives and marginalized issues in the world around us.
