At Art Busan that opened this April, amid booths filled with grand, attention-grabbing works, sangheeut’s solo presentation stood out in its own quiet way. Rather than shouting for attention, the modest booth—featuring small paintings roughly 30cm in size, sparsely placed as if floating—seemed to wait patiently to be discovered. Drawn to its understated presence, I found myself taking a closer look at the works of artist Michael Rikio Ming Hee Ho.
 
Each painting was both an image to see and a line to read—idealized landscapes embodying a vague longing to be elsewhere, layered with unsent text messages, letters never delivered, or words whispered so softly they were never heard. These fragments of language captured something tender and unresolved. The artist’s gentle way of holding the sorrow and disillusionment of those navigating an unstable world seemed to carry a quiet radiance. I found myself captivated, lingering at the booth. Only as I was about to leave did I notice the title: tenderness is the car and I drive you’re in the passenger seat and we’ll take this road trip slow and we’ll send postcards and write love letters.

지난 4월의 아트부산, 크고 화려한 작품으로 기세를 떨치는 많은 갤러리 사이에서 상히읗 갤러리가 마련한 솔로 부스는 어쩐지 담소했다. 가로세로 30cm 내외의 작은 작품들이 부유하듯 듬성듬성 놓인 이 부스는 존재를 외치기보다 조용하게 발견되기를 기다리는 듯한 태도로 자리하고 있었고, 나는 그 은은한 존재감에 이끌려 작가 마이클 리키오 밍 히 호의 그림들을 살피게 됐다. 어디든 다른 곳에 있고 싶은 막연한 갈망을 담은 이상화된 풍경 위에 늦은 밤 보내지 못한 문자메시지, 끝내 전해지지 않은 편지, 너무 작게 속삭여 아무도 듣지 못한 작가의 문장이 더해진 작품들은 보이는 시이자 읽히는 그림이었다. 불안정한 세상을 살아가는 이들의 슬픔과 환멸을 조심스럽게 감싸안는 작가의 방식은 작지만 깊은 빛을 품고 있었다. 이에 매료되어 한참을 들여다보았고, 떠날 때가 되어서야 전시의 제목을 알게 됐다. <내가 모는 차의 이름은 다정함. 너는 그 옆자리에 있고, 우리는 천천히 길을 달리며 엽서를 보내고 사랑의 편지를 쓸 거야>.
