In 2021, sangheeut opened its space at the five-way intersection in Haebangchon, presenting a year-long series of experimental exhibitions. After a brief hiatus, the gallery marked a fresh beginning last summer. Yet then, as now, director Hyejin Jee repeatedly finds herself pausing before the question: what justifies an exhibition?

2021년, 해방촌 오거리에 등장해 1년간 실험적 전시를 선보이던 상히읗은 잠깐의 휴식기를 가진 후 지난 여름 새 출발을 알렸다. 대표 지혜진은 그때나 지금이나 전시의 당위성을 묻는 질문 앞에 반복적으로 멈춰선다.
상히읗의 전신은 3년 전 큐레이터 컬렉티브로 시작한 동명의 프로젝트였다. 모두 이름에 ‘ㅎ’이 들어가고, 소위 말하는 메가 갤러리에서 일하고 있고, 전시 기획에 관심이 많다는 공통점이 있는 친구들과 시작한 일이었다. 딱 1년만 공간을 빌려 우리가 하고 싶은 전시를 해보기로 하고 덜컥 건물부터 계약한 것이다. 그렇게 공간을 얻게 된 1년 동안 주변 눈치 보지 않고 퍼포먼스, 스크리닝, 오픈콜 전시 등 그야말로 하고 싶은 프로그램을 다양하게 진행했다.
그때와 지금, 어떤 점이 다른가? 지금은 혼자 운영하고 있다는 점만 달라졌을 뿐 방향은 같다. 석사 때 전시사(Exhibition Histories)를 공부하며 전시로 당대의 사회·문화적 맥락을 포괄적으로 읽을 수 있다는 것을 배웠다. 그때의 배움이 지금 상히읗을 운영하는 기조 같은 것이 되었다. 왜 지금 이 작가의 전시를 열어야 하는지, 대중에게 어떤 의미가 있을지와 같은 물음들은 2021년부터 지금까지 상히읗의 모든 프로그램을 관통한다.
